Inlays & Onlays![]() Prosthetic DentistryInlays and onlays are prosthetics just like crowns and bridges, only they are small and are fitted within the tooth. You do not have to remove a damaged tooth if it is not completely damaged. We will administer a local anesthetic for you and extract the cavity. The tooth will also be drilled to properly shape it for the inlay or onlay. An impression of the piece your tooth needs will be taken to the lab, and it will be made for you. Inlays and onlays are made of either porcelain or ceramic. They are made in the perfect shape to fit in the space left in your tooth, and then fitted and cemented. Onlays are used when the cusps and biting surface of your tooth have been damaged. Onlays are large and are designed with the exact top shape of the respective tooth that needs to be mended. After the preparation procedure, a temporary onlay/inlay will be made for your teeth as you wait for your permanent piece to be completed. Once completed, the temporary one is removed and the permanent piece is fixed in place. Natural FeelThere is no point of having an onlay on a tooth that is loose. It’d be better to have the tooth extracted and replaced with a bridge. Visit our office, and we will be able to advise on what your best options are. Inlays and onlays are fitted on your natural tooth, so you will hardly notice a difference once healed. You might feel a little pinch as a result of the drilling during the procedure though it should not last long. The tooth remains quite strong and feels natural. Do not use it to bite or chew hard stuff. If the discomfort after the procedure persists, come back to the clinic and get checked. It is important that you visit us when you have a damaged tooth so that we can examine it and recommend the perfect remedy. We will fit the best inlays or onlays on your tooth, and ensure it does not decay anymore and remains strong. Inlays and onlays are a way of preserving the natural feel of your tooth, even after it has been damaged. We will be happy to help you with any dentistry issues you have, and are looking forward to hearing from you.
